I haven't been a member long enough to have anything else that we used to do but haven't done in a while. The monthly dinners and the chicago-sf room parties are probably the best way to introduce a friend to the group, depending whether they're into cons or not, as well as any particular interests they might have (books, games, etc.).

Events don't have to be at a person's house. I used to host Cool Movies because I have the space. The book group meets monthly in the Oak Park Public Library. There may be other venues such as libraries, restaurants, bars, etc. which might be interested in hosting a Cool Movie night. It wouldn't hurt to ask around and see if there's interest. The Council can help as well if this is of interest to the group (and it sounds like there's interest from at least 2 people :) ).
In theory, theory and practice are the same, but in practice, theory and practice are not.

I'm loving all these replies, actually. I'm just trying to get a feel for people's perceptions of the group. I have a pretty good feel already for what the group IS, but that isn't always as important as what people THINK it is, or think it SHOULD be. Information Is Awesome.

I do miss the Cool Movie nights. One of these days we'll find a good space to resurrect them. Important needs are Comfy Chairs, Big Screen, Good Sound, Public Transit Access, and Room for 10+ people.
