Alias to forums?

Postby fringe » Sun Apr 04, 2010 1:12 pm

Would it be possible to create an alias (symbolic link) to the forums from /forum? /phpBB3 is non-intuitive and, being on a *nix box, case sensitive. This means that if I type http://chicago-sf.org/phpbb3/ manually in my browser I get a 404 error.
In theory, theory and practice are the same, but in practice, theory and practice are not.

Should be, I'll look into it. I've long considered giving it forum.chicago-sf.org, would that work for you as well?

Why not do both? There shouldn't be any cost (monetary, processor, or otherwise) to doing both.

Will that also allow links like "forum.chicago-sf.org/events" and "forum.chicago-sf.org/general", or would it only affect the index page?

Likely not.

Matt's right. Actually, I'm less likely to make an alias than to simply move the forum. Remember, the old forum was at the /forum location, I only used the default phpBB3 path because in the 2.x -> 3.x upgrade I wanted to have a full, working backup sitting behind me, so I actually ported the db to a new install elsewhere.

Building in /events, /general so forth would probably not work, those paths don't exist in how the forum is structured as simple paths.

/forum now aliases to the forums. At some point I'll migrate that so we're back logically _at_ /forum again, but I want to let people change their links slowly.
