Anime recommendations

Otaku Encyclopedia by Patrick Galbraith, has a list of recommended anime; by the way, it's a companion list to his list of recommended manga (see another message on this bulletin board). Let's be clear from the begining, this list is not carved in stone and delivered from a burning bush. It represents and reflects Patrick's likes, opinions and prejudices. However, Patrick is a graduate student at Tokyo University, and while researching the encyclopedia has probably given the topic more thought than most would ever consider doing.

Considering the foregoing paragraph, I'm offering the list here as a point of starting a conversation. In other words, maybe you think Otaku no Video is the absolute WORST, most terrible thing ever (and maybe your opinion is formed by more substance than 'it sucks'). Then we can discuss.

Patrick's list (Essential Anime): Adieu Galaxy Express 999, Akira, Bleach, Bubblegum Crisis, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2, Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, Ebichu Minds the House, Elfen Lied, Excel Saga, Fist of the North Star, FLCL, Full Metal Alchemist, Ghost in the Shell, Little Norse Prince Valiant, Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro, Magical Princess Minky Momo, Martian Successor Nadesico, Mazinger Z, Megazone 23, Mobile Suit Gundam, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ninja Scroll, Oh, My Goddess, Otaku no Video, Paranoia Agent, Revolutionary Girl: Utena, Rozen Maiden, Samuai X: Trust and Betrayal, Serial Experiments Lain, Sexy Commando Side Story: That Amazing Masarusan, Sgt. Frog, Space Battleship Yamato, Spirited Away, Super Dimension Fotress: Macross, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, The Grave of the Fireflies, Trigun, Urusei Yatsura

I'll offer some based on my very limited knowledge. Otakudom animes beyond Otaku no Video: Genshiken, Comic Party. Miyazaki's beyond the two listed: Kiki's Delivery Service, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, Spirited Away (it won an Academy Award). Barefoot Gen as an addition to Grave of the Fireflies. Maison Ikkoku because of its historical value to Rumiko Takahashi, although Urusei Yatsura might be a better choice. These are a few examples.

Additionally, The Otaku Encyclopedia has its own FB page. And I posted the question on the page what Patrick's criteria for compiling the list was, and his reply was that listing criteria was based on the individual texts impact on Japanese otaku. So it's not necessarily a list of the best and greatest.
